What’s Inside Your Dog And Cat Food? (Part 1)

For most, commercial dog or cat food is the solution to our pet’s appetite. It’s tasty, simple, easy, and solves the problem of what to feed them. However, is it the healthiest solution, or the best?

Food manufacturers are motivated by cost. Naturally, if a food is of higher quality, it will find itself in a better pet food, while the lesser quality items will go into the less costly products.

Because of this, the contents of cat and dog will probably be poorer than ‘people’ meals. Additionally, the regulations for labeling and contents are not enforced the same way as human meals, which could affect how some obey the laws.

Meat is expensive, so to reduce costs, filler and extender are added. As was shown in March of 2007, impure filler led to deaths. The problem was gluten, which was used to enhance and extend the petfood.

Other extenders include byproducts, a broad term that covers a wide variety of organs, and which may hide a number of issues.

According to reports, animals that are considered unfit for humans may end up in the petfood. For instance, indications that creatures that are sick, euthanized from veterinarian clinics, dying, and even roadkill can be included in the pet food.
