An Easy Guide To Training Your Cat (Part 1)
|
Most cat owners are not looking for a cat trained to jump through hoops. They will be satisfied if the litterbox is used properly and all the furniture is left alone.
Accordingly, it is important to understand that cats learn by experiencing. This might require an owner to exercise patience, to build a pattern of cause and effect. This means that if they encounter something good they are likely to repeat it. Also, the reverse is true if the experience was not pleasant. So whatever there’s good behavior (like clawing the pet scratching post instead of your furniture), you will want to reinforce that with a good reward each time.
Whether it is good or bad behavior, your cat will learn it by this pattern of immediate response. Delaying a reward or punishment will only confuse her. For example, if a cat is used to being fed each and every time it pesters you, that’ll encourage the behavior. So it is important to evaluate your actions accordingly.
