Has Dog or Cat Eaten Tainted Food? Here’s What To Do (Part 1)
|
Obviously, if your pet’s food is a suspected brand, you need to quickly throw it out. Take care that your pet won’t find it in the garbage (or animals out of the house when it’s disposed of). You can also return the product to the store if unopened for a refund, when possible.
Examining your pet by yourself is a good step. For instance, watch if they they walk fine (no limping), brush your pet’s fur, looking for changes (such as hair loss), sniff out bad smells, are their eyes or nose runny, and check other differences of their appearance. Of course, not everything will likely be perfect with your pet, so pay attention to any changes, as these changes may alert you to a problem beginning.
Key is to watch that your dog or cat likely will have visible signs of illness before they become dangerous. Be on the watch for differences in overall health, drinking, defecation, urination, their mood, appetite, or any other area of them and their health.
In the case of the contaminated pet food, kidney failure is a result of the poisoning, and this can cause extreme thirst in pets, and infrequent urination. Other problems include lethargy, diarrhea, change in appetite, and more.
