About Poisoned Food And Your Dog Or Cat (Part 2)

Melamine has been used for plastics for years, and is also a pesticide in Asia, which could explain how it got into the wheat originally.

So far, both cats and dogs are affected. However, more cats are experiencing life-threatening health issues than dogs. Some theories for this include that cats require more protein in their diet than dogs (and so more gluten eaten), that cats eat more for their weight than dogs, and that cats may be more sensitive to the toxin causing the sickness.

Currently the recall has involved close to 100 brands of wet pet food, and a producer, Menu Foods, has recalled close to sixty million packages, with over millions in losses.

Although the product recall has affected some dry cat and dog food, for the most part the recall has only involved wet varieties of pet food.

If you suspect a problem with your pet, it is vital to get prompt attention. The kidney damage caused by the toxin is irreversible, so quick treatment is needed to stop further damage.

For their safety, remember to monitor your own cats and dogs. Take note of any change in attitude or energy, as well as eating or water consumption. Symptoms like ignoring water (or drinking more water), avoiding food, listlessness, or infrequent urination are items to look into right away.
