Cat Or Dog Proofing Your Place (Part 1)

Whether you own a dog or a cat, ensuring your house is a safe place for them is important. Protecting your pet is easy, with just a few simple guidelines.

Keep dogs or cats away from problems by thinking ahead. Pets will often eat items that catch their interest, whether they are safe or not. For example, anti-freeze attracts pets with its sweet taste, but it is a powerful poison, and absolutely must be kept far away from them and under lock and key. Likewise, items like cleaning solutions, or electrical cords for appliances. These should be locked up, hidden, or otherwise kept far away from your dog or cat.

Even ordinary objects can be unsafe. For instance, cords from drapes are easy to tangle in, particularly for cats. Plastic garbage bags have to be put away so your pet can’t play in them and get hurt. And small objects like curios or toys can be a real danger if the pet tries to swallow them. Pieces may fall off, or they may swallow a item.

If your cat or dog goes outdoors, you’ll need to monitor things there. Fences where your cat or dog can escape must be fixed, and you need to watch out for anything that might attract the notice of your pet. Watch out for plants in your yard (since some plants are lethal for animals). Painted wood may encourage chewing, but could have lead paint. You should also check that no places exist for insects to live, such as mosquitoes, ticks, fleas, which could harm your dog or cat.
