Pet-Proofing Your Place (Part 1)

Whether you own a dog or a cat (or both), ensuring your place is a safe place for them is important. Protecting your pet is easy with just a few simple rules.

Keep cats or dogs away from danger by thinking ahead. Dogs and cats will often eat items that catch their interest, whether they are safe or not. For example, antifreeze attracts cats and dogs with its sweet taste, but it is powerful chemical, and must be kept away from them and locked up. The same thing goes for products such as cleaning chemicals, or electrical cords on appliances. These must be hidden, locked up, and otherwise kept far away from your cat or dog.

You also need to be careful as your cat or dog wanders into certain parts of the house. For instance, you probably won’t want them to go into the garage, because there are so many possible toxins (such as antifreeze or oil spills). Cabinets or closets with toxic chemicals must likewise be put off limits, such as with child proof locks.

Even ordinary objects can be dangerous. For instance, cords from drapes are easy to get tangled in, especially for cats. Plastic garbage bags have to be immediately stored away so your cat or dog won’t play in them and get in trouble. And small objects like curios and toys can pose a real danger if the pet tries to chew on them. Pieces may fall off, or they may swallow a item.
