How To Groom Your Dog (Part 1)

When learning to groom your pet dog it is crucial to keep in mind that every pet has her own characteristics, and while many will enjoy the experience, others might shy away from being touched.

Ideally, you should start when your pet is still a puppy. You may have to keep each session short at first but patiently keep to a schedule.

Use a gentle but firm voice and manner. It may help at the beginning to just give your pet a massage until he calms down for you to commence grooming.

It may also be useful to give your pet dog a treat at the end of every grooming, to reward good behavior.

Bathing a dog requires some care. Many dogs remain a little shy of the process. Prepare everything ahead of time and have all your equipment ready as you might only get one shot at it! Ensure the bath matches the dog in size. Use a mild temperature for the bath and a soap that will not irritate the skin. Take care not to get water in her ears or around the eyes. These are sensitive places prone to infections. Use a firm manner when talking and coax your dog rather than using force if possible.

Brushing your dog’s teeth may require care. It’s important to start while he is young. You can begin by using your finger with a bit of coarse cloth to rub along the gum line and teeth. In time, you can attach a brush to your finger and add in some dog-flavored toothpaste to help.
