What To Look For When Boarding Your Cat Or Dog (Part 2)

Is the kennel a secure area that would prevent your pet from wandering away and possibly looking for you?

What are the kennel’s regulations regarding parasite control and immunizations?

What is are the provisions for food and fresh drinking water?

Are they ready to deal with problems, and how?

Are rest and exercise areas secure and safe from other animals?

Is there good climate control, adequate ventilation, good light, and a healthy environment?

Does the conduct and appearance of the kennel’s staff satisfy you?

For cats, is the area enclosed for their protection?

Always feel free to ask questions about their guidelines in an emergency. A kennel with standards should be able to answer any questions that you have. They’ll also be able to provide their written agreement that outlines what their duties and your rights are. This will help clarify any misunderstandings.

Proper supervision from adequately trained personnel is also essential. They should be trained to look for any signs of unusual behavior, discomfort, and act upon it promptly.

It is good to keep in mind that some boarding kennels may limit contact with the area the animals are located. This can be to reduce undue stress for any of the animals who could react strongly to strangers. In any case, they should provide a window or viewing port for customers to observe the conditions available for their pets. Also keep in mind points like the dogs having enough room to run in. Also that cats have adequate room to stretch and feel separate from all other cats if they want.
