How To Groom Your Cat (Part 1)

It may appear at first that cats do a perfectly fine job of grooming themselves. But if we take the time to brush their fur we can assist them, and help encourage their fine health, by aiding their blood circulation and by collecting hair that they might end up swallowing.

Begin brushing your cat while it is still a kitten so it will get used to the attention. Maintain a cheerful tone and always reward your pet with a treat to make the experience pleasant.

Use a soft comb and brush in the direction of the hair growth so as not to irritate your cat’s skin. It’s suggested that longhaired cats be groomed practically every day while short-haired cats can get by with two or so combings a week.

Take care at the ears as cats have delicate ears. Working carefully will prevent the comb from jamming up and getting you bogged down.

Begin clipping your cat’s nails while it’s young. Don’t use household clippers. Invest in a proper pair of clippers for cats that are shaped for trimming the curve of their nails. Keep the sessions short and quick. Do only a single paw each time. Gently press on the inside of the paw to help show the nails.

Then smoothly clip just the end. This is important since cats have a vein that runs up into their nail. It may be seen if the cat’s nail is translucent enough.
