Selecting Your Best Pet Friend (Part 1)
|
A few guidelines in selecting include:
How free is the dog to roam while living in your household? If you have a smaller home or apartment, you may need to get a small dog. Additionally, larger pets need more room to run and roam, which makes them difficult to keep in a smaller location.
Are there any rules locally? For condos or apartments there might be requirements regarding sizes and breeds you may own. This may reduce your options.
Will your choice be ‘high maintenance’? Some pets require a great deal more maintenance than others. For example, poodles will require special care for their appearance. Other dogs have health problems such as Dalmatians and hip dysplasia, which may make care an issue in the future.
How affectionate do you want your pet to be? Some dogs are normally quite gregarious, but other breeds are more aloof or contained. Depending on your needs or the time you have available to spend with them, you may want a dog that is more independent, or else more loyal to you.
