Is Your House Safe From Your Cat Or Dog? (Part 2)

Keep dogs or cats away from problems by thinking ahead. Pets will often chew items that interest them, whether safe or not. For instance, anti-freeze attracts cats and dogs with its sweet taste, but it’s deadly poison, and must be stored far away from them and under lock and key. Likewise, products such as cleaning chemicals, or electrical cords on appliances. These should be locked up, hidden, or otherwise kept far away from your cat or dog.

If your pet goes outside, you will need to watch over activities there. Areas where the pet can get out must be repaired, and you have to watch out for anything that could attract the notice of your pet. Be careful of plants growing in your backyard (some plants are deadly to animals). Painted surfaces may encourage them to chew, but could contain lead paint. You should also ensure that there are no places for insects to grow, such as fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, which could hurt your pet.

Although pet proofing your place is a lot of effort, watching over your family’s friend makes it all worth while. And with just a few minutes of planning, you can help your dog or cat and prevent any unnecessary problems.
