Legal Actions Result From The Tainted Dog And Cat Food Scare (Part 1)
|
Dogs and cats in both Canada and the United States have experienced serious problems, such as loss of appetite, seizures, death, kidney failure, and other symptoms as a result of eating contaminated pet food. As a result, there has been a recall of millions of food items.
Despite some uncertainty as to the cause of the problem, the poisons in the foods have been identified, and the manufacturer, Menu Foods, has voluntarily recalled the products.
Class action suits are in motion in this case for this company as well as others. In one class action, 2 Manitoba, Canada plaintiffs are suing over the death of their pets, several puppies and a cat, after eating the recalled food.
Although Menu appears to be bearing the brunt of the legal actions, other companies are involved as well. Royal Canin, (Canada), based in Guelph, Ontario, is being sued for about fifty million dollars over contaminated food. In this case however, the problem is excessive Vitamin D, which can be dangerous to dogs and cats in large enough does. And so although the symptoms seem to be the same as the other foods, the underlying reason is different.
