Home Made Pet’s Food And Why It’s Good (Part 2)

While petfood you purchase will now be perfectly safe, making your own will result in better, fresher, food for your pet. One disadvantage is that preparation will take more time than buying. Also, since the big companies making the food can make it cheaper in quantity, you could pay more for food you make at home. But the benefit is a healthier meal for your pet.

Roughly speaking, a cat’s diet can be about 50% meat, and 50% carbohydrates (such as vegetables like brown rice). In contrast, a dog can do well on about 25% meat, and 75% carbohydrates.

An important thing to avoid is feeding your pet your food. As an example, garlic and onions are actually posionous for cats, and cause anemia. Tomatoes include a chemical that can cause extreme stomach upset in cats. Chocolate has been shown to be toxic to both dogs and cats. And grapes and raisins are to be avoided by dogs.

You can browse the Internet for specific foods and recipes. Take care that the recipe makes sense, and that the ingredients are good for your pet. Ideally, if the Internet site shows how they use the recipe themselves, you can read how well it goes over, and if their pets enjoy it. This will avoid you wasting time and money on an untried recipe, or a recipe your dog or cat won’t enjoy.
