About Poisoned Food And Your Dog Or Cat (Part 2)

Melamine, used to make plastics, is also a pesticide in Asia, which may explain how it made its way into the wheat originally.

Although the product recall has affected some dry cat and dog food, most of the items involved in the recall has only involved wet pet food.

Both dogs and cats are affected. However, more cats are experiencing complications than dogs. Theories for this include that cats tend to eat more for their weight than dogs, the fact that cats require more protein in their diet than dogs (which means more gluten consumed), and that cats may be much more sensitive to the chemical causing the illness.

All together, the recall has involved close to 100 brands of wet dog or cat food, and one manufacturer has recalled approximately 60 million products of food, totaling millions of dollars in losses.

If you note a problem with your pet, it is very important to seek immediate attention. The kidney damage caused by the poison is irreversible, and so immediate treatment is needed to halt any damage.

So for their protection, remember to monitor your dogs and cats. Pay attention to any change in attitude or energy, as well as eating or water consumption. Symptoms like ignoring food, listlessness, ignoring water, or drinking more water, or infrequent urination are causes to look into immediately.
