Pet Proofing Your House (Part 1)

Whether you own a dog or a cat, making sure your place is a haven for them is vital. Protecting your cat or dog is quite easy, with just a few simple rules.

You have to be alert when your dog or cat wanders into certain parts of your house. For example, you likely won’t want them in the garage, since there are so many possible threats (such as antifreeze or oil spills). Cabinets or closets with toxic chemicals must likewise be placed off-limits, perhaps with child-proof locks.

Keep dogs or cats away from danger by thinking ahead. Dogs and cats will often eat items that interest them, whether they are safe or not. For example, anti-freeze attracts cats and dogs with a sweet taste, but it is a powerful toxin, and absolutely must be kept far away from them and under lock and key. Likewise, products like cleaning solutions, or electrical cords for appliances. These must be hidden, locked up, or kept far away from your dog or cat.

If your dog or cat goes outside, you will also need to watch over things there. Fences where your pet can get out must be fixed, and you’ll have to check for anything that might attract the notice of your dog or cat. Watch out for plants growing in your backyard (since some plants are beautiful, but deadly to animals). Painted surfaces may encourage chewing, but could contain lead paint. You should also check that no places exist for insects to thrive, such as fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, which could hurt your dog or cat.
