If your dog or cat is under the weather, it’s important to keep her or him away from small ones. Just as people are cranky and more likely to react when feeling lousy, your pet needs time away from little children. Pets need an opportunity to get better, and placing it in the center of attention won’t help. And of course this is important for any situation when an animal is sick.

Small ones, both part of the family or visiting, need to learn how best to play with your dog or cat. It’s important that they be told it’s not a toy, and that it needs care like any living thing. Tugging, slapping, hitting, pulling, or any other obnoxious behavior must not be allowed, and you will need some kind of discipline, to tell the child how bad this is.

Growing up with a dog or cat can be a wonderful memory for small tykes. With a bit of thought and care, it can likewise be a wonderful period for your pet, too.
