Poisoned Food And Your Dog Or Cat (Part 1)

If you’ve watch the news, you’ve seen the epidemic health problem plaguing the nation’s pets in March 2007: tainted pet food that’s making cats and dogs sick, and dying.

Shortly after consuming the poisonous food, the animals have been suffering. These pets are having serious problems, including lethargy, vomiting, kidney failure, and death in some cases. Although few animals have died the crisis has affected many cat and dog owners, and others.

At first, people were concerned that the toxin was part of rat poison, namely the chemical aminopterin. Aminopterin is used mainly in chemotherapy. However, while New York officials found this, the FDA did not confirmed the matter.

Currently, the view is that there was a quality control issue with the wheat gluten from a distributor. The poisonous chemical in the wheat gluten, melamine, is used in pesticides, as well as for plastics.

Gluten is the protein part of the wheat flour. It is similar to gelatin, and is valuable in food because it adopts the flavor and texture of the food it is with. It also adds volume to food, and can imitate meat by taking on its flavor and texture as well. It also adds chewiness and elasticity to products, as well as act as a binder, filler, and thickener.
