Childproof Your Dog And Cat (Part 1)
|
Most types of dogs and puppies have a great temperament around children, and handle some roughhousing without getting aggressive. Sadly, this is rarely the situation for cats. Especially with small children, playing with or picking up the cat can often result in bites or scratches, and further problems. When you’re expecting visits from little children, you should try to keep them away from each other whenever possible. And if you have yet to make a choice about a dog or cat for your home, you might want to consider if a cat is the right choice.
Especially when your cat or dog is ill, it is important to keep her or him away from little children. Just as people are miserable and more prone to act up when feeling sick, your dog or cat needs quiet time apart from little ones. Your pet needs peace and quiet to get better, and placing it in the middle of a crowd will not help. And of course this is important for any situation when an animal is sick.
Small ones, both part of the family or dropping by, must learn how best to handle their dog or cat. They must be warned it’s not a toy, and that it needs care like any other playmate. Pulling, slapping, hitting, tugging, or other unpleasant behavior must not be allowed, and you should have in place some kind of punishment, to tell the young one how bad this is.
