Legal Actions Result From Contaminated Pet Food Crisis (Part 1)

The current tainted pet food crisis has left many frightened, upset, confused, and angry. Now they’re fighting back with legal claims and class action lawsuits.

Pets in both the United States and Canada have suffered through serious problems, including loss of appetite, kidney failure, seizures, death, and other symptoms resulting from eating poisoned petfood. The result has been a recall of millions of products.

While there’s some uncertainty as to the exact cause, the poisons in the pet foods have been isolated, and the producer, Menu Foods, has voluntarily recalled the pet foods.

Class action suits are now being prepared in this case for this company as well as others. In one lawsuit, two Manitoba plaintiffs are suing Menu Foods for the death of their pets, several puppies and a cat, after being fed the recalled food.

And while Menu seems to be experiencing the brunt of the legal actions, there are others involved as well. Royal Canin, based in Guelph, Ontario, is being sued for around fifty million dollars for the tainted food. However, in this case the problem is excessive Vitamin D, which is harmful to dogs and cats in large does. So although the symptoms appear to be the same as the other foods, the underlying reason is different.
