What Is Inside Your Cat And Dog Food? (Part 1)

Commercial dog or cat food is an easy solution to our pet’s appetite. It is simple, easy, tasty, and solves the problem of what to serve them. However, is it the safest solution, or the best?

A problem in the industry is that the products are motivated by cost. Naturally, if a food is higher quality, it will find itself in a premium petfood, while the lesser quality food will go into the less expensive packages.

Because of this, the contents of dog and cat will quite likely be inferior to ‘people’ food. As well, the laws for labeling ingredients is not enforced the same way as with our foods, which may incline some to be somewhat lax in how they label their food.

Meat is expensive, so to keep petfood costs low, filler and extender are added. As seen in early 2007, tainted filler resulted in deaths. The culprit was gluten, used to enhance and extend the petfood.

Other extenders include byproducts, a broad term that includes a wide variety of animal organs, and which can hide a huge host of serious problems.

According to stories, animals that are unfit for our food may end up in petfood. For example, there are indications that animals that are dying, ill, euthanized from clinics, and also road kill are included in the pet food.
