DIY Dog Or Cat Food - Why It’s So Good (Part 1)
Cooking up your own pet’s food can be a loving thing to do for your dog or cat. While not as convenient as using prepared food, it is possible to better monitor what your dog or cat is eating, and improve their nutrition.
All animals, including humans, have important nutritional needs. And while prepared dog and cat food is convenient, it may not be the best option in all situations.
Many dog and cat foods are made as cheaply as possible, and for the pet needs second. This may mean often using cheaper and lower quality materials. For example, many dog or cat foods include vegetable matter as filler (such as the wheat gluten that was involved in the petfood scare of March 2007). Although this does lower costs, it is not the regular source of protein pets are designed for - meat.
While in theory dogs can live without meat, cats can’t. Several nutrients are needed by cats, and are most easily found in meat. However, unless you are willing to do a great deal of research into nutritional needs, and watch over your pet’s eating, you’ll want to make sure there’s sufficient meat in their meals.
