About Poisoned Food And Your Dog Or Cat (Part 1)
|
Very soon after consuming the poisoned food, the animals have started suffering. These pets are having serious problems, such as kidney failure, lethargy, vomiting, and even death in some cases. Although few animals have died (a couple dozen) the crisis has affected many dog and cat owners, and others.
At first, people suspected that the problem was a substance in rat poison, specifically aminopterin. Aminopterin is used in chemotherapy. While New York officials stated this, FDA officials did not confirmed the matter.
Currently, the main opinion is that a food distributor’s product included toxins. The dangerous chemical in the wheat gluten, melamine, is also used in pesticides, as well as for plastics.
Wheat gluten is the protein part of the wheat flour. It is similar to gelatin, and is good for food because it adopts the texture and flavor of the food it is in. It’s used to add volume to products, and may imitate meat by taking on the texture and flavor as well. It can also add chewiness and elasticity to products, plus works as a binder, filler, and thickener.
