Pet Proofing Your Home (Part 2)

Keep dogs or cats away from problems by thinking ahead. Cats and dogs will often chew items that interest them, whether they are safe or not. For instance, antifreeze attracts dogs and cats with a sweet taste, but it is a powerful poison, and absolutely must be stored away from them, under lock and key. Likewise, products such as cleaning chemicals, or electrical cords for appliances. These should be hidden, locked up, or otherwise kept far away from your cat or dog.

Even day-to-day items can be dangerous. For example, drapery cords are easy to get tangled in (particularly for cats playing with them). Plastic bags need to be immediately put away so your dog or cat can’t play in one and get in trouble. And small objects like curios and toys can pose a real danger if the pet tries to swallow them. Pieces may break off, or they may swallow something.

While pet-proofing your house is a lot of effort, protecting your friend makes it time well spent. And with just a few minutes of planning, you can aid your dog or cat, and prevent any unnecessary emergencies.
