The Benefits Of Neutering Your Pet (Part 1)
|
When you search the literature, you’re rarely presented both sides of the discussion. This is probably because, aside from a few instances of poor health (making surgery a problem), or actually wanting the dog or cat to reproduce (such as a show dog or cat), there are very few reasons to avoid neutering your pet.
Proof that neutering is effective but safe is that the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) actually neuters all older dogs and cats that are adopted as a matter of course.
Many of the concerns regarding pet neutering are because of our feelings on the subject. What seems to be major surgery to us is not the same to our dogs and cats. While there is the instinct to breed in all animals, there doesn’t seem to be ill effects when it is prevented.
Neutering your cat or dog can prevent household problems. While in heat, cats and dogs can upset people with noise and mating activities, can make messes with discharges or spraying, can experience behavior problems, and really become an annoyance. Neutering makes this behavior disappear, and the pet is more even tempered.
