Do you have local regulations? For condos or apartments there might even be standards regarding breeds or sizes you may own while living there. This can limit your options.

Can the pet move around while living in your household? With a small home or condo, you will likely need to find a small pet. Additionally, large pets require more room for running, which makes them a problem to keep in a smaller location.

Is your pet going to guard your family and you? Some dogs are naturally noisy, and others are very passive. While barking constantly is annoying, a bark when needed for an intruder is very welcome!
