Should You Make Your Own Dog Or Cat Food? (Part 1)

With the scares about contaminated pet food, you might wonder if there is another option to give your cat or dog the food he or she requires. An alternative option? Making food yourself for your pet.

For owners that love their pets, cooking the pet food themselves can be a nice alternative. While not as simple as store bought food, it is possible to monitor what your pet is eating, and improve their nutrition.

All animals, including humans, have specific nutritional requirements. Although prepared dog and cat food is handy, it might not be the best in all cases.

Many dog and cat foods are made as inexpensively as possible, and the pet’s requirements second. This may mean using cheaper and lower quality materials. For instance, many cat or dog foods use vegetable matter for filler (like the wheat gluten involved in the pet food crisis of early 2007). Although this does lower costs, it’s not the regular source of protein household dogs and cats are made for – meat.

While in theory dogs can go without actual meat, cats can’t. Various specific nutrients are required by cats, and are found in meat. So, unless you are prepared to do a serious research into needs, and also watch over your pet’s dining, you’ll want to ensure there’s sufficient meat in their diet.
